How to Determine Your Kibbe Body Type

IMPORTANT: This post is now outdated. For a newer version of the test, check out my 2020 version.

The Kibbe Body Types are a series of 13 body types, which are broken down into 5 families: romantics, classics, dramatics, naturals, and gamines. If you want to learn more about these types, check out my post An Overview of the Kibbe Body Types.

What I like about the Kibbe body types is that the clothing, makeup, and hair suggestions for each type aren’t trying to ‘correct’ things like in other body typing systems. Instead the suggestions are lines and silhouettes that coordinate with your body.

If you’re interested in this system, this post is a small test that will let you figure out your Kibbe body type. This test is largely based off of the one from Kibbe’s book Metamorphosis, but I have made a couple of changes for clarity’s sake.

To start, you need to be able to analyze your own body. If possible, take a picture of yourself in a swimsuit or underwear, and make sure that you’re standing straight, and that the camera is neither too high nor too low (around chest-level works well).

If you’re not comfortable taking a picture of yourself, then you can use a mirror for this test. I slightly prefer a mirror myself, since sometimes a camera’s lens can cause distortion, and it can be difficult to take a picture of oneself without anyone else helping.

Now that you’ve seen your body, it’s time to start the test.

IMPORTANT: This post is now outdated. For a newer version of the test, check out my 2020 version.

Make sure you have a piece of paper where you can write down your answers to each question. Also, please make sure that you write down which section each answer is for! Even better is if you can write down which question each answer is for, but I understand if you’re not comfortable doing that.

For example, something like this will work well:
Bone Structure: 3B 1A
Flesh: 4D 1B
Facial Features: 2D 2E 2B

Instead of this:
1A 6B 6D 2E

That way, if you need help figuring out what your body type is, I can help you more easily. It will also help you figure things out if you’re confused between two or more body types. Or if you want some help figuring out your body type, I do offer consultations, where I will determine your body type for you.

Also, please choose the answer that best describes your body. Our bodies are more on a spectrum than in discreet shapes, so not every answer will fit perfectly, especially if you’re young and your body is still changing.

First we’ll start with the overall bone structure.

Overall Bone Structure.

1. How long is your vertical line?

Another way to ask is this, is how tall do you look? If you have a small head compared to your shoulders, you will look taller. If you have a large head compared to your shoulders, you will look shorter.

My vertical line is:

A) Long (I look taller than I actually am)
B) Moderately long (I look like I’m slightly taller than I actually am, but not by very much)
C) Moderate (I look to be my actual height)
D) Smallish (I look slightly shorter than my actual height)
E) Petite (I look shorter than I actually am)

2. What’s the shape of your shoulders?

Be careful about your posture when answering this question, as slouching can change the silhouette of your shoulders.

My shoulders are:

A) Sharp, narrow
B) Blunt, broad
C) Moderate, even
D) Sloped, tapered (can be a bit sharp, but still sloped)
E) Sloped, rounded

3. How long do your arms and legs look in comparison to your body?

This is in proportion to your body, specifically your torso. Even if you’re short, you can still have long legs or arms compared to your torso, and vice versa. If you’re not sure how to check this, just put your arms to the sides of your body, and see how far down your thigh your fingertips end.

Answer C will end at about the halfway length of your thighs, so if you have shorter arms, you’re answer E or D, if you have longer arms, you’re answer A or B.

Make sure to relax your arms while doing this, as stretching them out will make them seem longer than they are.

My arms and legs are:

A) Elongated, narrow
B) Elongated, broad
C) Moderate, even in proportion to my height and torso
D) Small, slightly short
E) Small, very short in proportion to my height and torso

4. What are the size and shape of your hands and feet in comparison to the rest of your body?

My hands and feet are:

A) Long, narrow
B) Large, broad
C) Moderate, neither very large nor very small
D) Small, narrow, delicate
E) Small, slightly wide

Next we have the flesh on your body. Please note, that body fat doesn’t effect this answer. This is about the overall look of your flesh, your skin and muscles.

As an example as to why: some people have very soft and puffy cheeks, even when underweight. Other people have very tight skin on their cheekbones, even when overweight.

If you’re still curious about this, here’s a video that explains why body fat doesn’t effect your Kibbe body type. It’s by Merriam Style, one of my favorite ‘Kibbe Body Types’ YouTubers, and she has wonderful content that analyzes all the different body types.

Flesh on the Body.

5. What’s the overall shape of your body?

This question takes into account both how your torso, waist, and hips look, and also the general look of your arms and legs. We’ll be getting into some specifics soon though, so if you’re confused by this question, try returning to it after doing the next few questions.

The overall shape of my body is:

A) Long, lean, dry
B) Broad, tending toward muscular
C) Moderate, even
D) Shapely, a delicate hourglass
E) Very soft, lushly curved, a ripe hourglass

6. What’s the shape of your bust line, or upper torso?

This question refers to the shape of the bust, and also includes some descriptions for gaining weight, since some body types gain flesh here easily. The actual cup size of your bra doesn’t matter here, since the bust line is relative to the shape of your body.

The overall shape of my bust line is:

A) Flat, taut (I never seem to add flesh here, even when overweight)
B) Wide, broad (I add a little flesh here when overweight, but not very much)
C) Moderate, in even proportion to my waist and hips
D) Shapely, curved, more prominent then my waistline (I tend to add flesh here when overweight)
E) Very prominent (whether I’m thin or heavy, I’m always busty)

7. What’s the shape of your waistline?

Again, this question is in proportion to the bust and hips.

The overall shape of my waistline is:

A) Elongated, but boyishly tapered (even when overweight)
B) Elongated, but broad
C) Moderate, slightly defined
D) Very small in proportion to my bust and hips
E) Softly defined, but tends to be slightly wide

8. What’s the overall shape of your hips?

Like the last two questions, this question is in proportion to the rest of your body.

The overall shape of my hips is:

A) Tapered, straight, narrow (but I do thicken here when overweight)
B) Straight, slightly tapered, and slightly wide (weight collects on the hips)
C) Moderate, in even proportion to my bust and waist
D) Shapely and rounded, more pronounced then my waistline
E) Extremely soft and rounded (whatever my weight is)

9. What best describes the flesh on your upper arms and thighs?

One good way to test this is to feel the flesh on your upper arms and thighs. I work out almost every day and I’m very thin, but my flesh is still squishy and soft, therefore I have answer D flesh.

The flesh on my upper arms and thighs are:

A) Long, slender, sinewy
B) Elongated, tending towards muscular
C) Moderate
D) Soft, slightly short
E) Very soft, slightly wide and fleshy

Now we have the facial features. Make sure that you aren’t wearing heavy makeup that would interfere with seeing the shape of facial features, such as contouring, or overly lined lips.

Facial Features.

10. What’s the shape of your jawline?

My jawline is:

A) Sharp, either very pointed or very square
B) Broad, blunt, slightly wide
C) Moderate, neither wide, sharp, nor rounded
D) Delicate, tapered, or slightly narrow
E) Rounded or softly wide

11. What’s the shape of your nose?

In the picture below, it may be a bit difficult to see the difference between the B option and the E option. That’s because the difference is in the bridge of the nose. B noses that broad and wide bridges, E noses have smaller and rounder bridges.

My nose is:

A) Sharp or prominent
B) Broad or blunt, on the large side
C) Moderate (not very large or small, not very rounded or sharp)
D) Delicate, tapered, narrow
E) Rounded or softly wide

12. What’s the shape of your cheekbones?

Ignore the flesh of your cheeks and look just at the shape of your cheekbones for this question. You may need to feel the bones to get your answer, especially if you have very full flesh.

My cheekbones are:

A) High and prominent
B) Wide
C) Moderate
D) Delicate, narrow, and slightly rounded
E) Rounded

13. What’s the shape of your eyes?

My eyes are:

A) Narrow, straight, closely spaced
B) Narrow, straight, widely spaced
C) Evenly spaced, moderately sized
D) Rounded or upturned, slightly close together
E) Very round and very large

14. What’s the shape of your lips?

My lips are:

A) Straight, narrow (possibly described as thin lips)
B) Straight, strong, broad (but not full)
C) Moderate, even (not very straight, but not very full)
D) Slightly full and rounded
E) Very full and very rounded

15. What best describes the flesh on your cheekbones?

Remember, this isn’t the bone itself, but the skin and muscle that covers it.

My cheeks are:

A) Flat and taut (and tend to stay tight when overweight)
B) Fairly tight or muscular, but I tend to get a bit puffy when I put on weight
C) Moderate, slightly soft
D) Soft and fleshy (gets very full with excess weight)
E) Very round and fleshy (stays round and fleshy even when thin or underweight)

Normally there is also a question about hair texture and curliness, but since hair can be manipulated so easily with curlers, straight irons, extensions, etc. I prefer to disregard this question.

Now let’s move on to the results, on the next page!

  1. Please help! My sister has me stuck on Kibbe now, so I’m going insane.
I feel too soft for an (FN), and the recommended lines make me look tent-ish and overwhelmed. I’m pretty sure I’m not yang enough in my flesh to be a (D).
(SD) lines look good on me.
Anyway, sorry, ranting. Any and all input is so welcome, each of the IDs are beautiful in their own ways!

    BODY BONES
1A. (Very tall. People sometimes guess I’m even taller, and never think I’m significantly shorter than I am.)
2B. (Broad: ‘Sharper than blunt’ so to speak, but not an A answer either.)
    3A.
4A. (My palms may lean a tiny bit toward B)

    BODY FLESH
5B. (Not dry, really, but broad shouldered with narrow hips. (See Waistline)
6E. (I get shoulder pain if my bust isn’t supported properly.)
7E. (I’m fleshy for sure, but I do go in visibly and softly at the middle.)
    8B.
    9D.

    FACE BONES
10B. (But the flesh over it is soft, so it can appear more yin than it is.)
    11C.
12A. (Too high and prominent for a B answer, but not as sharp as many Dramatics have.)

    FACE FLESH
    13D.
    14A.
15B. (I’d say it’s soft yang, but as soon as I gain weight they go D/E quickly!)

    Blessings!

    1. Hey Rebekah!

I’m so confused with my results, could you help me out a bit?

      Bone structure:
      1- C
      2-D
      3-D
      4-D

I’m actually very short, 150 cm. Everyone can say objectively that I’m short and small in stature, however most are usually a bit surprised to hear that I’m THAT short. Everyone estimates me as a couple of inches taller but undeniably short nevertheless. So I don’t know if I should put E in the first one.

      Flesh on the body:
      1-C
      2-B
      3-C
      4-A
      5-D

      Facial features:
      1-C
      2-E
      3-B
      4-A
      5-C
      6-E

I gain weight first and mostly in my abdomen, waist is still slightly defined, but I get chubbier around the lower abdomen. It is followed by face, a double chin and chubbier cheeks. Then thighs and bustline. Hips-never. When I work out, my torso takes an upper triangular shape without the excess fat in the middle. But I never get a super slim waist. Slightly defined but never too prominent.

Looking forward to your feedback. Thanks a ton<3

    Body Flesh: 5B 6.C 7.E. 8.B 9.B Facial Features: 10D, 11 C 12 E ( 13 E 14 E 15 C 16 D. I am confused with the scoring system and distinguishing between “mostly B with some D and E” and “even mix of A/B and D/E with slightly more A or B”. Thanks for your blog! It’s great.

    1. Thanks for commenting! Based on your results, I’d say that you’re a soft natural.

The difference between gamines and other body types is that gamines tend to have a mixture across all the categories, whereas soft naturals tend to have mostly Bs in their bone structure, with some D or E answers in their flesh or facial features. I hope that makes sense, but if not I’m happy to go into more detail to clarify things!

    10. E
    11. B
    12. B
    13. A
    14. D
    15. D

As you can see B is the most popular answer but only by 1, and I seem a completely even split between yang and yin features overall. I am struggling to fit my answers to your blog post! Also, I am 5′ 8″ (172cm), and I keep reading that can only make me either a Dramatic type or a pure Natural – but I don’t feel like either of those options fit! I really don’t have angular, straight lines and my only A answers are how tall I look and my eyes. Which leaves pure Natural – but how can I be, having so much yin? Can I be a tall Soft Natural?

Would this make me either a DC or SN??

I’m 5’7”, pretty flat chested, have a waist, and have always held most of my weight on my thighs & hips (which is increasing even more now). I have only ever worn casual clothes and always feel uncomfortable in more formal or fitted clothing (I’ve even missed some special events as I wouldn’t dress up!) So i certainly don’t feel ‘classic’. I’m comfortable in jeans and t shirts, or wide leg pants, baggy tops etc. My personal style is definitely toward bohemian. I feel as though nothing of this matches……

  19. Hi Rebekah, thanks for giving some visual aids in the quiz (it’s helpful to have it in black and white as I find that less distracting). I’ve been trying to figure my type out for months now but I seem to always come to the same conclusion that my face and my body really don’t match. I’m 5’6 so the height restrictions don’t help much apart from potentially excluding gamine. The best approximate match in celebrities that I have found is maybe Lucy Liu. I’d be really grateful for your opinion! x

    My results:
Bone structure: 1C 2B 3C 4C (but possibly E as my hands and feet are moderate but wide)
    Body flesh: 5D 6C 7D 8D 9D
    Facial features: 10A 11A 12A 13D 14D 15C

    1. Thanks for commenting, Lea! I can see why you’ve been having difficulties, your results are definitely a bit of a tricky set. I’d say that you’re a Dramatic Classic, but it’s also possible that you’re more of a Soft Dramatic. I do body type consultations based on photos, so if that’s something that you’re interested in, here’s where you can find out more: https://cozyrebekah.com/consultations/

    1. Hi Thaís, I hope you’re doing well as well! You definitely have a tricky set of results, so I think that it may come down to your height. If you’re short, than you’re likely a Gamine of some sort. If you’re tall, then you’re likely a Soft Dramatic.

I hope this test will help me not to look awkward in my outfits since I can only shop online because of lockdown…

    Bones:
    1 C
I didn’t know what to put in here…
Because I’m only 160 cm and I obviously don’t have any visible elongation in my body, but my head is small comparing to my body and shoulders…But my shoulders are not broad, they are still slightly narrower than my hips…
    2 C
    3 E
My arms are not that short, but the legs…😅

    Body flesh:

    Facial fearures:

    10 E
    11 B
I didn’t know what to put here because I got a nose hump and my nose is quiet big and popping out of my face, but somehow soft at the same time…
    12 C
They are not prominent, but not too round
    13 E
    14 D
My lips are actually something in between D and E, because the shapes of my upper and lower lip are different.
    15 C
Not too soft and not sharp…

    I would assume I am a Romantic…Right?😅

    1. Thanks for commenting with your results, Amanda! They do indicate that you’re a Soft Gamine, since there’s a lot of mixture, but your E and D answers outweigh your A and B ones. As for your C answers, because C answers are so blended, they don’t actually influence the results unless they’re the dominant answer. 32. Hi! I have been familiar with the Kibbe system since it 1st came out. I have done the test so many times- objectivity is a problem for most of us, I guess! I am certainly either TR or SG. I wonder what your thoughts are on this problem I encounter with the test. I have Long arms, but shortish legs. I also have answer A feet and answer D hands. As these are not separated out in the test, I don’t know how to answer. Depending on which way I go, these change my results. I cannot say I can see either very clearly on me. Waistline would suggest I am not TR, hands would suggest I am. There are looks in both that I can wear well, and looks in both that really don’t work on me. Any thoughts for me?

    1. Thanks for asking! I actually separated those questions down into one question just for arms, one for legs, one for hands, and one for feet in my 2020 version of the body types test, because I noticed that sometimes members of the Gamine family would have different results for those questions. Gamines are characterized by a ‘mix and match’ of results, so it makes sense that gamines would sometimes have different answers for their arms and legs or hands and feet.

Based on your description of yourself, I think that you’re a Soft Gamine. Here’s the link to my SG Pinterest board: https://www.pinterest.ca/cozyrebekah/soft-gamine-kibbe-body-types-inspiration/

  33. Hi Rebekah!
Since the Kibbe test uses eurocentric standards I’m not sure where I fall as a Black woman. I identify with Flamboyant gamine more than Soft Natural even when not pandemic fluffy. I’m 5’6, but my wingspan is 6’ so I’m all arms and legs w/a super short torso. My feet are long + narrow, palms are longer than they are wide, long substantial fingers – I can palm a basketball! broad blunt shoulders, A cup bust but broad 35.5” and people definitely think I’m taller than I am. My face looks SUPER youthful like frozen in time at 22 (i am not in my 20s)

    Bone structure: 1B, 2B, 3A, 4B
    Body Flesh (pandemic pounds edition): 5C, 6B, 7C, 8C, 9B
    Face: 10E, 11E, 12E, 13C, 14E, 15D, 16B (natural hair)
    Totals: A1, B6, C4, D1,E4

    Please help! Thanks!!

  35. Hi Rebekah,

I am sure I am something on the yin side of the Kibbe spectrum, but I’m confused as to what I am exactly!

    Bone Structure: 1B 2A 3C 4E
    Body Flesh: 5D 6B 7D 8E
    Face: 10A 11C 12A 13A 14E 15C 16A

I am barely 5’3”, but many people assume I am about an inch or two taller. I have extremely small hands, I wear child size gloves and wear a size 4/34 shoe, but both my hands and feet are wide & square. I am very pear shaped with a “bubble butt” and have always been athletic with very strong legs, though not super defined. Anything I wear needs a high, defined waist and cropped shirts tend to actually hit where shirts should. I wear petite shirts, but not pants. I feel & appear tiny next to my average sized friends and bigger next to other petites. My mom is def a soft dramatic, with one gm being a gamine & the other being a tr.

      1. Hi Rebekah,

Thanks so much for the reply! I will take a peek at your board and look forward to seeing the suggestions on it.

I was wavering between some sort of gamine, romantic, or a tr, but I think you are right that I am probably a flamboyant gamine. I’ve read that something about fgs will be exaggerated and I think for me that would be my thighs, which I think is confusing because the assumption is curves=romantics. My body is a lot like the prototypical gymnastics body type, but with sharper/narrower shoulders and a smaller waist. So while it has curves, it is also very strong/sturdy looking.
