Okay, so this isn’t my everyday nighttime routine. This is more my ideal nighttime routine, or what my routine is when everything goes to plan. I’m human, meaning that I mess up like everyone else, so I can’t always follow this routine to a T.
However, sharing my routines with others helps keep me more on track with them. Lately I’ve been having difficulties sticking to routines, so I decided to make this post to try and motivate myself to stick to my routine more, in order to reap the benefits.
One of the most noticeable benefits from my nighttime routine, is that I’m a lot more relaxed when I follow it, which helps me fall asleep easily. Here’s my routine, so that you can see if it also helps you relax:
8:30 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. – Saying Goodnight to my Parents
This is the most flexible part of my routine, since it relies a lot on what my parents are doing. Usually they watch some TV before going to bed, so this part of my routine will happen somewhere between 8:30 P.M. and 9:00 P.M. depending on when they’re finished.
We start off our goodnight process by saying a quick prayer, and then we move on to sharing the things that we’re grateful for. I’m really glad that we do that, since I’ve noticed an overall improvement in my happiness levels since we started that habit.
After we’ve said a prayer, shared what we’re grateful for, and said goodnight to each other, my parents have to say goodnight to Godot, our 2 year old Boston Terrier pup. Godot sleeps at the end of my bed each night, but he refuses to go to my room without a goodnight kiss from each of my parents.
9:00 P.M. to 9:15 P.M. – General Nighttime Chores and Activities
After I’ve said goodnight to my parents, I move on to the normal part of my nighttime routine. I start by cleaning my teeth, which can take awhile depending on how much work I need to do (I have braces). Usually I just brush my teeth, but sometimes I have to use a water pick as well.
After I’ve cleaned my teeth, I change into my pajamas, and then I clean out the cat litters.
9:15 P.M. to 9:30 P.M. – Skin and Hair Care
Generally, I only wash my face once a day, in the mornings when I shower. However, on the rare occasion when I wear makeup, I will also wash my face at night.
If I do wash my face at night, or if my skin is noticeably dry, I’ll moisturize my face. I also always moisturize my hands, since my hands dry out easily.
After I take care of my hands, I move on to hair care. My nightly hair care routine starts off with brushing out any tangles that have occurred throughout the day, and then I move on to a light face and scalp massage.
Massaging my scalp and face helps increase blood flow, which aids in hair growth. I also find it very relaxing, a perfect activity to lower stress levels before going to sleep.
Once I’ve finished my massage, I re-brush my hair, to get rid of any messiness caused by the massage.
After all that is done, I drink anything between half a glass to a full glass of water, and put on some lip balm, to keep my skin and lips (as well as the rest of my body) hydrated throughout the night.
9:30 P.M. to 10:00 P.M. – Relaxing
After I’ve hydrated, I start working on activities that relax me, such as writing in my bullet journal. I enjoy keeping track of things in my bullet journal at the end of the day, such as how much work I did (and on what), what my plans for the next day or the rest of the week are, etc.
If I know I’m going to be busy the next day, I’ll also take some time to choose an outfit in advance, that way I can save some time in my morning routine.
Assuming I have the time for it, I also enjoy watching a motivational YouTube video, or seeing what’s happening on Instagram.
10:00 P.M. – Sleep
Once the clock hits 10:00 P.M. it’s time for me to go to sleep. I wake up at 6:00 A.M., so I choose this time to go to sleep so that I can get about 8 hours of sleep each night. Some nights I go to bed earlier, some night I stay up later, but 10:00 P.M. is my ideal time.
And that is the end of my routine, and subsequently this post. If you’re curious about my morning routine, here’s a link to the post on it.
