Hair Cuts, Styles, and Colors for the Body Types

Before I begin, I would like to get a quick disclaimer out of the way. You are allowed to have your hair in any style or color that you want. This post contains suggestions for what will suit the lines of your body, but if you prefer something else, go for it.

That being said, you may not know what body types I’m referring to in this post. If you’re unfamiliar, the Kibbe body types are a set of 13 body types, based on the lines of your bone structure, flesh, and facial features.

If you’re unsure about what Kibbe body type you have then check out my Kibbe body types test post.

Another disclaimer I have is in regards to hair color. I think that a person’s natural hair color is their best, but in case you’re thinking of dyeing your hair, you have some suggestions for what will also suit you.

  1. I was just thinking that it would be good if you did a hair for body types post and here one is! You must be a mind reader.
Pity that neat and shiny looks good on soft classic. I have crazy curly, wild hair so, no hope of that! I don’t mind though, I like the curls.
    Anyway, great post.

    1. Just because you have wild hair doesn’t mean that you can’t have a soft classic style! For instance, pulling your hair back into a pony tail or a bun can create a tidy hairstyle.

In the header image of your blog, the hairstyle pictured is a great SC look, since the pony tail creates a neat look on the front, and the curls add some gentle softness, filling both criteria for a SC hairstyle. 😀

  2. hello! i am definitely a dramatic classic, but i have a messy, asymmetrical, wavy blonde pixie cut that looks great on me imo. (i look like sailor uranus or smth) long hair with a middle part that’s sleek or controlled makes me look like a caveman, especially with bangs. this doesn’t mean i’m not a dramatic classic right? thank you!!

    1. Whatever floats your boat! 😀 It’s been awhile since I wrote this post, and since then I’ve found that dramatic classics look great with a bit of asymmetry, and dramatic classics with a natural undercurrent could definitely pull off a messier look. 🙂

    1. That’s a really good question! In my experience, I’d say using different up-dos can do the trick. For example, a messy bun is a great go-to style if you’re a soft gamine with long hair, but you can also experiment with styles like space buns.

  3. Hello, I identify as FN and I love my thick hair down or cut short and voluminous on my days off. But at work, I am a nurse and can’t touch my hair at work (unsanitary! Can’t let a strand fall during wound care!) Are there any [neat or safe] hairstyles would work for a FN?

    1. Hmm, this is a really good question! I think that any sort of large bun would work well, as it would provide the volume to match your bone structure, but also be neat and secure.

I’m not sure what your hair texture is, but here’s some ideas for differing hair types and textures:

I do have to admit though that I tend to keep my hair very short, and even when I had longer hair I never experimented much with styles, so I’m not super familiar with the type of styles that stay in place well. Anyways, I hope that helps!

  4. Can a soft gamine with more romantic facial features look good with long hair? My hair is very long (at the hip) and I am very short(4’11”) and every time I try short hair I look very off even though I’ve been categorized as a SG – I’m not sure if I’m either just not SG because my face isn’t as sharp as some of the celebs I’ve seen or if it’s just because SGs all look different. Anyhow love your posts and blog!

    1. Thanks for asking, Bianca! I’d say yes, and I think a great example of a soft gamine rocking longer hair is Reese Witherspoon. In the movie Legally Blonde her hair is longer than most soft gamine examples, falling past her shoulders, usually in gentle waves.

While your hair is super long, soft gamines actually tend to have a really unique effect with long hair. It tends to make us look more ethereal or otherworldly, at least in my opinion (which is why I’m currently trying to grow my hair out again lol). Also don’t worry about your face. I really only have one sharp answer on my face (my cheekbones are rather wide), and it’s hidden most of the time by my glasses. Some soft gamines just have super soft faces.

  5. Hi Rebekah!

I’m a Pure Natural body type with fine, thin hair. Once my hair grows past my collarbones it gets really scraggly at the ends. How should I cut and style my hair? Please include an EXHAUSTIVE list.

    Thanks x

    1. Thanks for asking, Chloe! I have to admit, I’m not super good at hair stuff in general, but I’ll try to be as exhaustive as possible.

      1. A short asymmetric bob with finger teasing to add a bit of volume, like in this photo: https://i.pinimg.com/564x/f9/f4/e2/f9f4e272f85fd68ed04e859cdc26914b.jpg

      2. You could also go with a very layered haircut, to add volume around the face, like this: https://i.pinimg.com/564x/91/9f/15/919f15080ee2870a823bee0d5aaa7b7e.jpg

      3. Beach waves are another way to add a tousled look to your hair: https://i.pinimg.com/236x/43/ba/a7/43baa7e0bbdd8386cb8bf454b57c1ccb.jpg

      4. A messy half bun with bangs could look good too: https://i.pinimg.com/564x/01/5d/14/015d1428b2507f2d89954300c1992e3d.jpg

I think in general you’ll want to go with some layering to add more volume, and try doing some finger teasing to fluff up your hair throughout the day.

      I hope that helps!

  6. Great post! I’m a Soft Dramatic but my hair is extremely fine so I really can’t grow it out much past my jawline or it looks really thin and limp and just not good. I had a buzzcut for awhile, and now it’s in a pixie. The top has a lot of natural wave and softness to it, but the gradual buzz on the sides gives it some edge. My hope is that I’m still honoring my dramatic-ness with a bit of softness. I’ve always thought my face shape looks best with hair shorter than my ears anyway, but I would love a pro’s take on this! What would you recommend for an SD like me who can’t grow long hair, or is it possible I’m actually another body type?

  7. Thank you for this! I’m still tryin to figure out which of the Naturals I am, but I have naturally stick straight hair. Are there any haircuts that are good for strain get hair for SN, pure N, and FN?

    1. Thanks for asking, Thalia! Jennifer Aniston has pretty straight hair, and is a natural, so she seems to favor haircuts with layering at the ends to add volume. Getting curtain bangs (like these: https://i.pinimg.com/564x/b2/30/29/b23029ed1d5a1694f98ff729664c5543.jpg or these: https://i.pinimg.com/564x/09/ec/11/09ec1110d9dd9a72e635ef776c1bb81a.jpg) are also a great way to add volume to the face, and I think you’ll find it’s a really flattering option for any member of the natural family.

  8. Dear Rebekah,
you typed me as a Dramatic and I´ve got so much fun now to figure out my own style 🙂 I started to watch some YT to find out what Essence and Aesthetics mean in combination with one´s body type (not that easy, because everything is in English and I´m German – our school English is … ok, we have had some English and are able to survive lol…) and my body type doesn´t fit to my personality I think…

Now I´m experimenting with my hair style and am confused: The typical Dramatic styles don´t work for me. I was trying a Long Bob and styled it sleek, curvy etc. But I don´t feel comfortable with that. It seems to be to sleek and straight down and presents my sharp nose and fleeing forehad too much. The other style before (mid to long lenght layers) were boring said my husband but worked better in my opinion. Bangs don´t work for me either. Also I have a lot of volume which I love but is sometimes not good for short hair… Do you have an idea for a style? Layers for Dramatics? E.G. I like the hair of Sigourney Weaver in “You again”. Tough she is a FN I´m thinking of trying this?

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Hi Mara! I took a look at the hairstyle that Sigourney Weaver wore in You Again, and I think you should try it out! Because of the shaping of it, it’ll probably give you a slightly regal look! Keira Knightley sometimes wears her hair in shorter styles with some layering, and she’s a dramatic as well, so you can look at some photos of her to get some ideas for how layers work on the Dramatic body type. 😀

  9. Yes, I´m studying different Dramatics and also try to find out how the personality works together with the body type.

Keira Knightly seems to be a very open, strong and powerful person and short hair do suit her (though I like also her wavy hair as in Silk Road or Pride and Prejudice- she looks more fragile and angular). But her face is broader than mine- that´s why I struggle to try out her shorter hair cuts.

Aly Arts video on short hair for Dramatics suggested Linda Evangelista and Milla Jojovich- both are very strong and powerful personalities! Could it be that a Dramatic who doesn´t feel so powerful like a Dramatic looks like doesn´t fit to her best styles? (According to Merriam Styles Breaking the Rules video natural lines make Dramatics look more deinty/ fragile. This is how I feel more comfortable with.)

I try to find out s.o. who has an oval face like me and a more silent personality and studied different styles on her. That´s how I picked Cate Blanchetts wavy hair- unfortunately it didn´t work for me (my unloved facial features are too prominent now)

Segourney Weaver looks also very strong and strict but more self-behaved and her short hair in that movie suit her the best, I think. So I´m going to try this and hopeing that our hair dressers could stay open- next lockdown is discussed now.

    1. I hope trying out a more Natural-esque hair works out for you! I know what you mean about feeling a bit off in the typical hair for the body types. I love super short hair on other Gamines, but right now I’m growing mine out so that I can experiment with different styles. That’s the nice thing about hair, it can grow back if it isn’t quite what we’d like! 😀

  10. Hi, I wanted to give an update: the more natural style works way better! It seems to me that one´s personality is what needs to be expressed in the line of one´s body type to bring in harmony? Perhaps that´s why I loved my lion-like hair so much 🙂 I try to fit in natural vibe by following dramatic lines: long vertical line, big patterns, bold/ darker colors (easy for an dark autumn), mid to heavy fabrics and so on. My outer and inner appeareance are getting more and more in harmony- I feel very comfortable 🙂
