We all have a different coloring to our skin, which is why different colors will suit different people. However, colors for different skin tones are often over complicated, with colors being broken down into several sub-types, leading to systems that have 16 different color types.
In reality, the colors that suit us best can be broken down into 4 types. In this post I’ll go over how to determine your coloring, and which colors will look best on you.
How to determine your coloring
There have been lots of different tests created to determine what coloring someone has, however the test I’m going to describe is the most accurate one I’ve heard of.
Coloring Test:
- First, you’ll need four different colors of fabric, in bright blue, bright yellow, grey, and beige/brown.
- Go to a window where there’s plenty of light, and bring a mirror with you. Make sure there’s no artificial lighting, as that can throw off the test.
- Now, take your blue fabric and hold it up to your face, and look at your reflection.
- Then take the yellow fabric, hold it up to your face, and look at your reflection.
- Do the same with the grey and brown fabrics.
Make note of which fabric makes your skin look the healthiest.
Results:
Now here are the results. You can click on them to jump straight to the section on which colors will look best on you.
Bright blue – You have a cool and bright coloring.
Grey – You have a cool and delicate coloring.
Beige/brown – You have a warm and delicate coloring.
Bright yellow – You have a warm and bright coloring.

I would also recommend to take pictures in the same non-artificual outdoor lighting, on a not overly sunny (which can make you look brighter) or overly cloudy (which can make you look darker and more muted) day. When doing it live before a mirror our eyes may trick us. It’s easier to look at the pictures later, open them on your laptop, put the tabs next to each other and compare that way. Really do take care of it the lighting is the same though.

For sure! 🙂 The colors that are around us can affect the way we see ourselves in the moment, but then we can be more objective later when using a photograph.
But with viewing pictures you have to be careful too. My laptop makes everything look cooler than on other devices, so you’d also have to pay attention to the color balance of the device you’re using.
