There’s a certain amount of psychological importance that a person’s personal style has. As someone who’s interested in styling, sometimes people I talk to about it don’t understand why I think it’s such an important thing, so here are my reasons why:
Personal style can be an armor
I was in my early teens when I first really started to care about my personal style. I was going through what I consider to be the most difficult part of my life, and using clothing as a reflection of my personality and moods helped me cope a bit with what I was going through. I associate having to wear a uniform with that difficult part of my life, so when I didn’t have to wear a uniform, when I could just wear whatever I wanted, I felt stronger, and more free.
To this day, I still get a major confidence boost when I’m wearing clothes that I love and that I feel are an accurate representation of myself and my mood.
And it’s not just me; a lot of people feel more confident in certain cuts and styles of clothing. So if you’re ever having a bad day, try putting on one of your favorite outfits! It might help you feel better.
It’s fun!
Developing a personal style can be fun! And with the hectic world that we live in, I think having some fun should be encouraged.
Maybe it’s just because I have a love for interior decor, design, and visual arts, but I find working on my personal style to be a very enjoyable activity. I love matching pieces of clothing together to create a gorgeous outfit, figuring out which colors I like to wear, choosing different pieces to convey different moods, etc.
Clothing and accessories are to the body like furniture and decor is to the house! It can be fun to experiment with new fashions and trends, but it’s also super satisfying to develop an overall look that is uniquely yours.
Personal style can provide insights into people
You can tell a lot about someone by what they wear and how they wear it.
Someone who always wears matching colors and matching hardware is likely to pay close attention to details in general and can notice patterns easily. Someone who’s shoes are always perfectly clean and polished is likely conscientious of both their appearance and their surroundings. Someone who wears super bright and colorful outfits could be quite outgoing and sociable, and someone who wears mainly neutrals might be more practical and serious.
They say to never judge a book by its cover, but quite literally, the cover of a book can give indications of what it’s about, who the target audience is, what genre the book falls under, and what a person wears can say a lot about a person.
Humans are quite visual creatures, and so we use clothing as a way to signal to others things about ourselves, and we can use also use it to understand more about someone else.
Overall, a personal style can be of great importance to the wearer. Is there anything about personal styles that you like? Tell me about it in a comment!
Have a great week!
