Jewelry for the Body Types

Why do certain jewelry pieces, especially ones that are described as universal, look bad on me? How much is too much? Is this piece too fancy?

If those are questions you find yourself asking, then you’ve come to the right place. In this post I’ll be walking you through some of the basics of which jewelry pieces will suit you, how much (or how little) jewelry you can get away with, and give you some ideas of how to choose statement pieces.

This post is specifically about jewelry for the Kibbe body types, which is a system of 13 body types. To find out more, I suggest reading through my overview about the Kibbe body types, then taking the test to find out which one you are.

Romantic (R)

The romantic body type is on the extreme yin end of the spectrum, and its lines are soft, small, rounded, and slightly wide.

When choosing jewelry to wear, you’ll want to go with something in a rounded shape, that has some intricate touches. Don’t go too large, as something with a delicate look will be more cohesive with your body.

A necklace and a pair of earrings are just what you need to look put together, without going over the top. In general, I would advise going with one or two pieces of jewelry for an outfit.

Rounded lockets, pearls, and sparkly materials will always suit you.

Theatrical Romantic (TR)

The theatrical romantic body type is on the yin end of the spectrum, right next to romantics. Its lines are soft, small, delicate, and narrow.

When choosing jewelry to wear, go with a piece that has a rounded shape. Ornate jewelry will look fantastic on you. Don’t go too large with your jewelry, instead go for pieces that are intricate and delicate looking.

When choosing the amount of jewelry for an outfit, having one or two pieces that completely compliment your look is better than having several pieces that don’t. If you’re in a pinch, layering a few delicate necklaces over each other with give you that intricate look, without going over the top.

Don’t worry about your jewelry being too lavish or detailed, your body type can really handle that type of look.

Dramatic (D)

The dramatic body type is on the extreme yang end of the spectrum. Its lines are long, narrow, angular, and straight.

Going for something sharply geometric is always a good idea for dramatics. Jewelry pieces that are sleek, bold, or avant-garde will suit you, giving you the edge that harmonizes with your body.

Less is more for the dramatic body type. Having one piece of jewelry that suits you perfectly is better than having lots of pieces that almost do.

Something like a pair of sharply geometric earrings can carry an outfit all on their own, so don’t feel like you need to balance them out with an equally bold necklace.

Soft Dramatic (SD)

The soft dramatic type is on the yang end of the spectrum, next to dramatics. Its lines are large, bold, and angular, with some added roundness from soft flesh and facial features.

When it comes to jewelry, you can go really over the top without it looking tacky. Because of your lines, you can really handle large and ornate pieces of jewelry, like costume jewelry, without it looking odd.

I would suggest going with one to three pieces of jewelry for an outfit. If you want to lean on the fancy side, an ornate set of earrings paired with a necklace and ring would look stunning. Think ‘lavish’ when choosing your jewelry.

Stick with large shapes, as anything too small will look disproportionate on you. Slightly rounded shapes will also always suit you.

Classic (C)

The classic body type is in between yin and yang on the spectrum, as its lines are balanced, moderate, and symmetrical.

Your jewelry will look best when it’s small, symmetrical, and minimal. When it comes to classics, less is always more, so just a simple necklace or pair of earrings will look great.

Classics can get away with little to no jewelry, so I’d suggest going with one piece per outfit, maybe two for a fancier look. If you’re really interested in wearing a lot of jewelry, layering up a few minimal rings will give you a lavish look, without being over the top.

If you’re looking for a signature piece of jewelry, you can’t go wrong with something like small hoop earrings, a pair of pearl earrings, or a simple necklace.

Soft Classic (SC)

The soft classic body type is almost directly in between yin and yang on the spectrum, however it veers slightly more towards yin. Its lines are moderate, balanced, and symmetrical, however there’s a touch more softness and roundness than in classics.

You’ll look your best in jewelry that is symmetrical, small, and minimal, but with an overall rounded shape. Always remember that less is more.

One or two jewelry pieces,that suit you, will be perfect for pretty much any occasion. You can also get away with wearing no jewelry if you prefer.

A simple pair of pearl earrings will always look sophisticated on a soft classic, as will a rounded locket.

Dramatic Classic (DC)

The dramatic classic body type is almost directly between yin and yang on the spectrum, however it veers slightly more towards yang. The lines of this body type are moderate, symmetrical, and balanced, however there is some added angularity and sharpness.

When choosing jewelry to wear, you should go with pieces that are sleek, symmetrical, and minimal. Sharp or geometric pieces are best, and you can go slightly chunky or bold if you want to.

Like with the other members of the classic family, less is more, so go for one or two pieces of jewelry per outfit. If you want to, you can also get away with no jewelry.

A signature jewelry piece, that has a geometric shape and goes with almost anything, will be your best look.

Natural (N)

The natural body type is made up of broad and blunt lines. It’s on the yang side of the spectrum, but instead of having sharp and taut lines like the dramatic, the natural body type has more width and bluntness.

The jewelry that will suit you best are pieces that have an organic or handcrafted look. The kind where the shapes aren’t perfectly formed, they have a natural or imperfect look to them.

Naturals can get away with layering a lot jewelry, as long as the jewelry suits the lines of your body.

Layering chunky rings will look quite good on you, but if you want a more minimal look, you could try going for one bold statement pair of earrings.

Soft Natural (SN)

The soft natural body is made up of a mixture of blunt and broad lines, and soft and rounded lines. This mixture is generally formed by a natural bone structure, soft flesh, and a mixture of soft and blunt facial features.

When choosing jewelry to wear, you should go for something that has rounded shape, but some added organic or handcrafted features. Shapes that look like they’re imperfect or naturally formed, but with a rounded silhouette, will suit you best.

Soft naturals can get away with layering quite a few jewelry pieces, such as layered necklaces or rings.

If going for a signature piece, try a pair of artful earrings.

Flamboyant Natural (FN)

The flamboyant natural body type is a combination of width and muscularity, length and angularity. They have a combination of natural and dramatic features, which ends up with a balance that is quite sharp and masculine.

So what kind of jewelry suits this body type? Bold, big, and organic are words that should come to mind when thinking about the jewelry for this body type. Organic and rough shapes match with the natural lines, and bold geometric shapes match with the dramatic lines.

Like other members of the natural family, flamboyant naturals can get away with wearing a lot of jewelry pieces, layered over each other. For example, layered rings or necklaces will suit a flamboyant natural well.

For a signature piece, try a pair of bold, chunky earrings, or an organic looking ring.

Gamine (G)

The gamine body types is made up of a mixture of yin and yang features, which gives this body type a high contrast and energetic vibe.

The jewelry that will best suit a gamine are pieces that are small, detailed, and avant-garde. Jewelry is a gamine’s best friend, so you can go with some really interesting pieces, full of personality!

In general, a necklace that sits closer to the neck (such as a choker or a small chain) will look better.

Gamines can look really good with layered jewelry, as long as they’re not layering pieces that are very large. A few dainty rings, or a couple of delicate necklaces can look quite sophisticated on a gamine.

If you want a signature piece of jewelry, try a piece that looks like a small wire sculpture, or a piece that has a lot of personality.

Soft Gamine (SG)

The soft gamine body type has a mixture of yin and yang features, but with more yin than yang features, which gives them a soft look. Because of this mixture, soft gamines have a contrasted and high energy look.

When choosing jewelry pieces, go for pieces that are small, delicate, and detailed. Layering dainty jewelry pieces is a good way to achieve this look, and you can also mix some sharp and soft lines to match the mixture in your body’s lines.

Because soft gamines look good in high necklines, necklaces that sit quite close to the neck or collarbone will suit you the best.

Flamboyant Gamine (FG)

Flamboyant gamines are made up of a mixture of yin and yang features, but with a stronger balance towards yang, which gives them slightly more angularity and sharpness than gamines.

The jewelry that will suit a flamboyant gamine the best, are pieces that are small, angular, or avant-garde, but with a bit of added softness or roundness, to match the mixture in their body’s lines.

Gamines can look quite nice with layered jewelry, as long as they don’t layer pieces that are very bold or heavy. Though flamboyant gamines can get away with chunkier pieces than soft gamines, when layering it’s best to stick with smaller pieces.
